The Better AI Gets, the More Your Experience Matters

When people talk about artificial intelligence, the conversation usually begins with the technology.

Which model is smartest? Which tool generates the best images? Which platform can build an app from a prompt? How quickly will AI improve, and which jobs will it replace?

Those are important questions. But I believe they overlook what may become the most valuable advantage in the age of AI.

Experience.

When everyone has access to increasingly capable intelligence, the differentiator will not simply be who has AI. It will be who knows what to do with it.

AI can produce an answer. Experience lets you recognize whether it is the right answer.

Access Is Not the Same as Judgment

We are quickly approaching a world in which almost anyone can generate copy, create images, analyze information, write software, and develop ideas with tools that once required an entire team.

That is extraordinary. I know because I am living it.

Years ago, during the mobile-learning revolution, I had no shortage of ideas. What I lacked was the ability to build them. Turning even a small concept into a working prototype required programmers, designers, time, and money. Many ideas never traveled farther than a notebook or presentation.

Today, I can sit down with an idea and begin shaping it immediately. I can explore the strategy, work through the user experience, develop the language, create a visual direction, and sometimes build a functioning prototype—all in a fraction of the time.

But AI did not suddenly give me ideas.

It gave my ideas leverage.

That distinction matters because the same AI is available to millions of other people. Access to the tool is becoming common. Knowing what should be built, why it matters, how it should work, and what “good” actually looks like is not.

That knowledge is earned through experience.

Domain Knowledge Is Compressed Experience

Domain knowledge is more than information about an industry. It is the accumulated judgment that comes from doing the work repeatedly.

It is the lesson from the customer conversation that went differently than expected. It is the mistake you never make twice. It is recognizing a problem before it becomes visible to anyone else. It is understanding which details matter deeply and which ones merely create noise.

Much of that knowledge is difficult to explain because, over time, it becomes instinct.

After enough years in a field, you begin noticing things other people do not see.

I see this every day through Jacquez Art, the custom jersey-framing business I founded in 2011.

Someone unfamiliar with the craft may look at a framed jersey and see a jersey, a frame, a couple of mats, perhaps some photographs, and a nameplate. They may assume that producing one is mostly a matter of choosing colors and arranging the pieces.

I see fabric distribution, shoulder width, collar placement, the space surrounding the player’s name and numbers, the visual weight of every element, the relationship between suede colors and accent reveals, the depth of the frame, the glazing, the mounting, and what will happen when the finished piece must travel across the country.

I see what can be folded, what must remain visible, what looks balanced on a screen but will fail in the physical build, and when one more element will transform a composition—or ruin it.

There are countless framed jerseys out there that make it clear the framer sees jersey framing as no different from framing any other object. The goal seems to be filling every empty space with something: another photograph, another plaque, another strip of mat, another decorative element. The jersey becomes just one component in a crowded arrangement rather than the reason the piece exists in the first place.

That approach may technically fill the space, but it does not necessarily honor the jersey. A jersey has its own shape, movement, history, and visual language. It needs room to breathe. Empty space is not always a problem to solve. Sometimes it is what gives the important elements their power.

I also receive AI-generated jersey-framing concepts from people who have used a chatbot to imagine what their finished piece could look like. Some of the ideas are visually interesting, but they reveal a fundamental limitation: AI has no real understanding of the physical world.

It does not understand how fabric behaves when folded, how a sleeve creates depth, how a collar affects the composition, how a patch can interfere with a mounting point, how heavy materials need to be supported, or what can actually be built inside a frame and shipped safely.

It can create an image that looks plausible from the front while ignoring the physical realities that determine whether the design can exist at all.

AI can propose a jersey-framing design in seconds. But without domain knowledge, it does not necessarily understand why one design feels museum-quality while another feels crowded, generic, or impossible to construct.

The difference is not access to creativity.

It is the judgment to direct and evaluate it.

Digitizing an Experience Is Not Reinventing It

This becomes especially clear when companies use technology to “disrupt” a physical industry.

Too often, they begin by copying the existing experience and putting it online.

In traditional custom framing, a customer may be presented with walls containing hundreds or even thousands of mat colors and moulding samples. Add different glazing, mounting methods, sizes, accents, and combinations, and the number of possibilities becomes almost endless.

If we transfer all those options to a website, what have we actually solved?

The wall of samples has become an endless scroll. The physical order form has become a digital interface. The customer can click through frame styles, change mat colors, preview combinations, and eventually place an order.

That may be more convenient. But convenience alone is not reinvention.

I recently went through the online framing process at Framebridge. In the version of the experience I explored, after uploading an image and reaching the frame-selection page, I counted roughly 180 frame choices.

One hundred and eighty.

And that was only the first layer.

After selecting a frame, the customer can begin considering mat colors, mat widths, mat styles, textures, and accent mats. Each additional option multiplies the number of possible combinations—and the number of decisions the customer must make.

The experience was essentially saying:

Here are the frames. Here are the mats. You figure it out.

That is an impressive amount of inventory, but it is not expertise.

It does not study the piece and explain that one frame will overpower it, another will make it feel dated, or that a particular mat-and-frame combination will give the subject the presence it deserves. It does not narrow hundreds—perhaps thousands—of possible combinations into the few directions that genuinely make sense.

When More Choice Creates Less Confidence

Psychologists call this choice overload.

I know it from experience.

Having operated a physical custom-framing store for 15 years, I have watched it happen across the design counter countless times. We would begin showing a customer frame samples, mat colors, textures, and combinations. At first, the possibilities felt exciting. But if we continued presenting option after option, we could see the fatigue begin to set in.

The customer who had arrived enthusiastic would start second-guessing every decision. One frame looked good, but perhaps another looked better. One mat worked beautifully, but what about the color we had shown five minutes earlier?

The more possibilities we introduced, the less confident the customer sometimes became.

Eventually, I learned that my job was not to show customers everything we had.

My job was to understand what they were framing, what the piece meant to them, and how they wanted it to feel—and then use my experience to guide them toward the few directions that genuinely made sense.

That is what a wall containing thousands of samples cannot provide. And it is what an online configurator containing hundreds of choices does not automatically solve.

If all we do is reproduce an existing physical buying experience on the web, we have built a configurator. Nothing more.

The problem was never that customers lacked enough framing options. The problem was that most customers lacked the domain knowledge required to navigate them.

They do not need hundreds of frames multiplied by dozens of mat decisions.

They need confidence in the right direction.

A configurator says:

Here are all the available options. Start clicking.

A domain-informed experience says:

Tell me what matters about this piece. I will help you discover the few directions that make sense—and understand why.

Configuration gives people choices.

Expertise gives people direction.

The customer should not be required to supply the missing expertise.

Technology without domain knowledge tends to digitize what already exists. Domain knowledge reveals what technology should make possible.

From More Choices to Better Choices

This is where I believe AI can fundamentally change an experience rather than merely move it online.

AI should not give customers even more combinations. We already have too many combinations.

It should help interpret intent.

What does this jersey represent? Is the customer commemorating a single game, a championship, an entire career, or a personal memory? Should the finished piece feel historic, celebratory, minimal, aggressive, elegant, or museum-like? Which details strengthen the story? Which ones distract from the jersey?

The technology should not begin with a catalog.

It should begin with meaning.

That idea is shaping how I think about the Jacquez Art Studio, an interactive experience we are building around custom jersey design.

Most configurators rely on menus that control the object. Select a dropdown. Choose a color. Toggle an option. Watch the preview change.

In fact, our earliest version of the Studio began that way too.

It was easy to think that giving customers more control meant giving them a better experience. But the more we worked on it, the more I realized we were in danger of recreating the same problem online: presenting customers with options and leaving them responsible for making expert design decisions.

So we began asking a different question:

What if the object itself became the control?

What if moving a patch could reveal a new composition? What if interacting with the jersey helped customers discover layouts they did not know were possible? What if the experience responded not only to a list of selections, but to the story the customer wanted the finished piece to tell?

That is no longer the framing store moved onto a website.

It is a new creative experience made possible by understanding the craft deeply enough to reimagine it.

The future does not belong to the companies that give customers the most options. It belongs to those that use domain knowledge and technology to make the best options feel obvious.

AI Multiplies What We Bring to It

There is a popular fear that AI will make years of experience less valuable.

I believe the opposite may be true.

AI lowers the cost of execution, but it does not eliminate the need for direction. In fact, when producing something becomes easier, deciding what is worth producing becomes more important.

The beginner can use AI to experiment faster. That is wonderful. But the experienced practitioner can use it to multiply years—or decades—of accumulated knowledge.

The programmer understands architecture and tradeoffs that may not appear in generated code. The teacher recognizes whether a lesson will actually help a student understand. The physician sees the patient rather than merely a list of symptoms. The craftsperson understands materials, tolerances, and the physical consequences hidden behind a beautiful rendering.

AI contributes capability.

Experience contributes direction, discernment, and taste.

The real opportunity belongs to people who can combine four things:

Valuable ideas

Earned expertise

Human judgment

AI leverage

The tool matters. But the person bringing something meaningful to the tool matters more.

The Years Were Not Lost

For years, my wife would occasionally ask whether I thought I would ever return to technology.

I would usually say, “Maybe.”

My journey had taken me somewhere else. I stepped away from the technology world and built Jacquez Art. I learned craftsmanship, sales, entrepreneurship, customer psychology, storytelling, design, shipping, production, and what it means to turn an idea into something physical with my own hands.

At times, it might have been easy to view those years as time away from technology.

Now I see them differently.

They gave me a domain.

They gave me thousands of real customer conversations, countless design decisions, difficult mistakes, physical constraints, and lessons no prompt could have handed me.

Today, as AI gives me the ability to build ideas I once could only imagine, those years are not separate from the technology work.

They are the foundation of it.

AI did not make my years of experience obsolete. It gave those years a new way to express themselves.

That may be the greatest opportunity of this moment—not simply that AI can help us do more, but that it can help us finally do something with everything life has already taught us.

The better AI gets, the more our experience matters.

Because AI can give us capability.

But experience tells us what to do with it.
